WWE 2K25 Hands-On Preview

WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience

2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island" online world, revamped modes (Story, General Manager, Universe), a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, and more, were unfortunately unavailable for preview. My hands-on time focused on the core gameplay (largely unchanged) and the updated Showcase Mode.

Showcase Mode: A Step Forward

This year's Showcase centers on The Bloodline, spanning generations of Anoa'i wrestlers. It features three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. Experiencing these—recreating Nia Jax's 2024 victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Reigns vs. Rollins bout—was enjoyable and offered unique perspectives.

Improvements over previous iterations include reduced reliance on lengthy real-life footage ("Slingshot"). Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more satisfying experience. While not entirely flawless (control was lost during the Nia Jax match conclusion), it's a significant improvement. The checklist system, while present, is refined with optional timed objectives and no penalties for failure—a positive change. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering fresh gameplay for dedicated fans.

Gameplay Enhancements

Core gameplay remains largely consistent, which isn't necessarily a drawback. The return of chain wrestling, a mini-game allowing strategic advantage, adds a crucial WWE element. The submission system, a color-matching mini-game, also returns (though optionally disableable). Weapon throwing, a highlight from WWE 2K24, returns with expanded environments (including the WWE archives) and new weapons. The inclusion of Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle as a weapon is a humorous touch. Most notably, intergender matches are now possible, opening up numerous matchup possibilities alongside the game's largest-ever roster (300+ wrestlers).

A New Match Type: Underground

A brief look at the new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting with lumberjacks, hints at exciting new gameplay. A full match and detailed explanation will be available later.

Overall Impression

WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with incremental improvements. While the core gameplay remains largely familiar, smart refinements and new features enhance the experience. The unplayed new modes and features remain a mystery, but the changes experienced suggest a worthwhile evolution for wrestling game fans.
