During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was announced that the GameCube version of Wind Waker will be available on the upcoming console. This news led to speculation about the future of Wind Waker HD on the Switch 2.

However, clarity came from Nate Bihldorff, Senior Vice President of Product Development at Nintendo of America. In an interview featured on Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared his conversation with Bihldorff from a Switch 2 press event in New York. When asked if the availability of Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) would prevent a Switch 2 port of Wind Waker HD, Bihldorff promptly responded, "no, all options are on the table." This statement leaves the door open for a potential HD version port, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

First Released in 2002

Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, Wind Waker was later enhanced and re-released as Wind Waker HD on the Wii U in 2013. This HD version boasted significant upgrades including a shift from 480p to high-definition visuals, improved lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing mechanics, and various gameplay enhancements. With the GameCube library being exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only way for original Switch owners to experience this beloved title.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch Online classics are now being rebranded as Nintendo Classics. According to Nintendo, "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games slated for future release." Some of these titles will offer in-game options like a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
