Sydney Sweeney Nears Deal for Lead Role in Live-Action Gundam Film

Author:Kristen Update:May 14,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in HBO's *Euphoria*, *The White Lotus*, *Reality*, *Anyone but You*, and the superhero film *Madame Web*, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to star in the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, *Mobile Suit Gundam*. The film, which is currently without an official title, entered production in February following an agreement between Bandai Namco and Legendary to co-finance the project.

The movie will be penned and directed by Kim Mickle, renowned for her work on *Sweet Tooth*. While specific plot details and a release window remain under wraps, a teaser poster has been unveiled, hinting at the excitement to come. Variety was the first to report on Sweeney's potential involvement, though specifics about her character and the storyline are yet to be disclosed.

In addition to her acting, Sweeney is set to produce a film adaptation of a horror story originally posted on a Reddit thread, showcasing her versatility and growing influence in the film industry.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their commitment to gradually unveiling more details as they are finalized. They highlighted the significance of *Mobile Suit Gundam*, which premiered in 1979 and revolutionized the 'real robot anime' genre. The series moved away from the traditional good vs. evil narrative prevalent in robot anime at the time, offering instead realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific analysis, and complex human dramas centered around 'mobile suits'—robots treated as weapons. This approach sparked a massive cultural phenomenon.
