"Super Mario World: Unannounced Sequel Title Briefly Revealed in NBCUniversal Press Release"

Author:Kristen Update:May 19,2025

It appears that we may have an early glimpse into the title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, thanks to a premature reveal in an NBCUniversal press release. The document, which was meant to highlight the upcoming Upfront Showcase offerings, inadvertently mentioned "Super Mario World" as one of the anticipated films from Universal Pictures and Illumination, slated to stream on Peacock. This sparked a flurry of attention across the internet.

Reacting quickly, Universal revised the press release to remove any mention of Mario. The original text had grouped "Super Mario World" alongside "Shrek" and "Minions," which are known to refer to Shrek 5 and Minions 3, respectively. This suggests that "Super Mario World" might not be the final title for the Mario movie sequel but rather a placeholder or an umbrella term. After all, the upcoming Shrek movie isn't just called "Shrek," and the next Minions movie isn't merely titled "Minions."

Despite this, "Super Mario World" stands out as a more specific title than a generic "Super Mario" or "Super Mario Bros." This specificity lends credence to the possibility that it could indeed be the actual title for the next installment in the Mario cinematic universe. Given its historical significance in the Mario franchise, "Super Mario World" would be a fitting choice for the sequel's title.
