A unique twist on the classic Street Fighter tournament is hitting Japan, and it's all about getting those much-needed Zs. The "Sleep Fighter" SF6 tournament, announced by Capcom and organized by SS Pharmaceuticals, is pushing the importance of sleep to new heights. Read on to discover how this innovative event is blending competitive gaming with sleep wellness.
In a groundbreaking move, the "Sleep Fighter" tournament requires participants to prioritize their sleep. This official Capcom-backed event, sponsored by SS Pharmaceuticals, aims to promote their sleep-aid drug, Drewell. The tournament is structured as a team event, with each team consisting of three players competing in a "best-of-three" format to accumulate points and advance through the rounds.
What sets Sleep Fighter apart is its unique scoring system. In addition to earning points through victories, teams will also accrue "Sleep Points" based on the sleep hours logged by team members in the week leading up to the tournament. Each player must clock at least six hours of sleep per night, totaling a minimum of 126 hours for the team. Falling short of this target results in a penalty of five points per missing hour. To sweeten the deal, the team with the highest total sleep time will have the privilege of setting the match conditions for the tournament.
SS Pharmaceuticals is using this event to highlight the critical role that sleep plays in peak performance. Their campaign, "Let's Do the Challenge, Let's Sleep First," is designed to foster healthy sleeping habits in Japan. Sleep Fighter marks the first esports tournament to introduce a rule that penalizes players for inadequate sleep, as stated on the official website.
Mark your calendars for August 31, as the Sleep Fighter tournament will take place at Ryogoku KFC Hall Tokyo. Due to limited space, only 100 attendees will be admitted via a lottery system. For fans outside Japan, the tournament will be live-streamed on YouTube and Twitch. Keep an eye on the official tournament website and Twitter (X) account for more details on the broadcast.
The event promises to be a thrilling day of competitive gaming and sleep wellness, featuring over a dozen professional players and game streamers. Notable participants include two-time EVO champion "Itazan" Itabashi Zangief, top SF player Dogura, and many more!
