New Yakuza Title 'Like a Dragon: Stranger of Heaven' Revealed

Ryu Ga Gotoku's stunning and enigmatic new alt-history action game, previously known as Project Century, received a fresh trailer at Summer Game Fest. It delivered substantially more details, raised even more intriguing questions, and unveiled a brand new title: Stranger Than Heaven.

First revealed as Project Century at The Game Awards last December, Stranger Than Heaven initially came with little information about its actual nature. We know it's being developed by the legendary Ryu Ga Gotoku studio, creators of the Yakuza series, and features action combat that looks familiar to fans—though dramatically refined. The menus are sleeker, the combat feels more brutal, and the critical choice to "Show Mercy" or "Show No Mercy" presents a moral dimension never before seen in Yakuza.

While this latest trailer clarifies certain expectations, it simultaneously deepens the mystery. The original Project Century teaser was set in 1915 Japan, but this one appears to take place in 1943. Why two distinct time periods? Does this involve time travel, or is it an elaborate narrative with flashbacks and significant time jumps? The location is also puzzling. Is this Sotenbori, hinted at by the bridge? Kamurocho? Or an entirely new setting?

Both trailers showcase a fascinating fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with classic Americana, suggesting an alternate reality where different eras and cultures have collided. This visual and thematic dissonance is present in both depicted time periods. While the game is clearly set in Japan, the exact nature of its alternate history remains shrouded in mystery. Fan theories are already swirling and are sure to multiply following this new reveal.

We also learned the name of at least one key character: Mako Daito. He appears to be the protagonist, but given the twists so far, nothing is certain. His striking blue eyes and cryptic dialogue hint at something unusual about his nature, though specifics are unclear. Recall last year's peculiar tease suggesting Snoop Dogg might be involved—an intriguing casting possibility, to say the least.
