Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative minds behind A Minecraft Movie shared an intriguing tidbit with IGN: one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from the classic film The NeverEnding Story.

In a standout moment, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation, needing to hitch a ride on Jason Momoa's Garrett due to a shortage of Elytra wings, which are only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry. This scene turns into a hilarious display of physical comedy as Steve clings to Garrett, trying desperately not to plummet to the ground. But there's more to this scene than just laughs.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a 'Falkor moment' from *The NeverEnding Story*—something majestic and beautiful, yet hilariously chaotic," explained *A Minecraft Movie* director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious to watch between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on Jason in this intricate rig, and he started singing The NeverEnding Story theme, riding Jason like he was Falkor. It was pure comedy gold."

This scene is a delightful nod to Jack Black's past, as he previously played Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, it was a chance to showcase his creative input.

"I had a hand in writing that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa said with a chuckle. "We were inspired by Top Gun: Maverick—I wanted to pull off a stunt where I'd hit the brakes and Jack would slide off. We brainstormed this at the hotel, and it made it into the movie—it's just phenomenal."

Jack Black hinted at the scene's potential for more adult humor, saying, "I'm not sure if our more daring version made the final cut; there were different takes. But we kept it family-friendly in the end!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa exclaimed. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
