Hot on the heels of announcing an additional 26 cast members for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted that more surprises are on the way. Yesterday, Marvel unveiled the cast through a comprehensive livestream, confirming the actors who will join Robert Downey Jr. in this superhero epic, along with the commencement of production.
One of the standout announcements was Channing Tatum reprising his role as the beloved X-Men character, Gambit. You can explore the complete Avengers: Doomsday cast list here.
However, some notable MCU stars are missing from the lineup. Tom Holland's Spider-Man is notably absent, as is Chris Evans, who had been rumored to return in either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Evans later debunked those rumors. Additionally, key characters like Hulk, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and Rhodey are not on the list. On the X-Men front, there's no sign of Deadpool, Wolverine, Storm, or Jean Grey.
Fans expressed their disappointment over the absence of these fan-favorite characters, but hope remains. In a follow-up Instagram post, Robert Downey Jr., who will portray Doctor Doom after his iconic run as Iron Man, hinted that there's much more to come. He stated, "That’s what u call a deep bench of talent. Actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one… That must be it.. right?”
Marvel then teased in the comments section, "there's always room for more." The Russo Brothers, who are directing the film, added, "It’s time…"

Earlier this month, the Russo brothers shared that they envision Avengers 5 and 6 as a "new beginning," setting the stage for what's to come in Phase 7 of the MCU. Joe Russo elaborated, "The only thing I’ll say about the movie is this: we love villains who think they’re the heroes of their own stories. That’s when they become three-dimensional and they become more interesting. When you have an actor like Robert Downey, you have to create a three-dimensional, well shaped character for the audience. That’s where a lot of our focus is going."
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Secret Wars in May 2027. Leading up to these releases, Thunderbolts* will premiere in May 2025, the TV series Ironheart in June, and Phase 6 will kick off with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
In October, Marvel Studios added three untitled movie projects to its 2028 schedule, set for release on February 18, May 5, and November 10. Speculation is rife that one of these could be the much-anticipated X-Men film.
