Marvel Game Modder Delights Fans with Playable Doctor Octopus

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 25,2025

NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stifled creativity within the player base. A talented player, WickedCube, recently unveiled a compelling playable Doctor Octopus concept.

A 30-second gameplay video, shared on Reddit's r/MarvelRivals, showcases a rough but impressive rendition of Doc Ock. The footage, seemingly from a testing environment, depicts a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner suspended mid-air, highlighting Doc Ock's unique movement. The eight-armed villain utilizes his tentacles to magnetize himself, effectively allowing flight near stable structures – a clever adaptation for a game with destructible environments. His abilities, "Havoc Claw" (melee) and "Wrecking Grip" (ranged), are also defined. The video, garnering over 16,000 upvotes, demonstrates a polished concept created entirely by one individual.

WickedCube, an indie game developer with experience at Keen Software House, explained his inspiration: Doc Ock's unique tentacle-based abilities presented a significant development challenge, a challenge he embraced. A recent PSN outage and inspiring Doc Ock fan art provided the final push.

The enthusiastic community response has been incredibly rewarding for WickedCube, with many urging NetEase to incorporate his design. While he doesn't plan to further refine the current model, he intends to release a playable version and share the development process through a YouTube tutorial series and open-source code on GitHub.

NetEase's Marvel Rivals will receive its mid-season update on February 21st, introducing the Human Torch and The Thing, alongside balance adjustments and gameplay refinements. Despite this robust release schedule, the vast Marvel universe continues to inspire fan creations, with WickedCube already brainstorming concepts for Nightcrawler and Professor X. He praises the game's design, highlighting the difficulty of creating truly enjoyable gameplay.
