"Mario Kart World's Free Roam: An Open World Adventure with Friends"

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 20,2025

During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we were treated to exciting new details about the game's innovative Free Roam mode. This mode promises a highly interactive multiplayer experience, allowing players to explore the vast, Forza Horizon-like world of Mario Kart World at their leisure.

PlayAlthough we had the opportunity to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive look at what Free Roam mode entails. This new feature allows players to freely navigate the expansive world map, unlike previous Mario Kart games where race tracks were isolated and only accessible during races. In Mario Kart World, tracks are seamlessly integrated into an open world environment, enabling players to transition between tracks and explore the areas in between.

When you're not engaged in competitive racing, Free Roam mode offers an adventurous experience. The world is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the exact benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery. Additionally, players can encounter P-Switches throughout the map, which, when activated, trigger small challenges like collecting blue coins.

Another highlight of Free Roam mode is the ability to enter Photo Mode at any time, allowing you to capture stunning images of your racers from various poses and angles. But the fun doesn't stop there—Free Roam is not just for solo adventurers. You can join friends to explore the world together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply enjoy each other's company. The mode supports up to four players on the same system through split-screen play, or up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.

Today's Mario Kart World Direct also revealed a range of other exciting updates, including new characters, courses, and modes. To stay up-to-date with all the latest announcements, be sure to check out the full coverage here.
