Konami Unveils Mobile Game: Suikoden STAR LEAP

The beloved Suikoden series is making a comeback, albeit in an unexpected form. Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG designed for both Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play game, though without a confirmed release date, is expected to launch later this year.

For those unfamiliar, the Suikoden series, which first hit the scene in 1995, is a revered line of RPGs developed and published by Konami. The brainchild of Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin and is known in Japan as Suikoden. The franchise has captivated players with its intricate tales of political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including various spin-offs, the last installment was released back in 2012. Rather than a direct sequel or a full revival, Konami is introducing Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile game.

What's in Store?

Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the tradition of assembling 108 heroes, a hallmark of the series. The game pays homage to its roots with pixel art that evokes the classic Suikoden aesthetic. You can get a sneak peek in the teaser trailer below.

The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have significantly influenced the world's history. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, embarks on his journey following his first successful hunt. However, tragedy soon strikes as the village is attacked, propelling Hou into a quest for peace alongside Hisui, Shirin, and Shapur. Hisui, Hou's servant, possesses a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend, embodies a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, once a general, now serves as a butler.

Despite the excitement, the Suikoden community has mixed feelings about this new direction. Many fans have been eagerly awaiting a traditional continuation of the series, and the introduction of Suikoden STAR LEAP as a gacha game has sparked some debate. We'll have a clearer picture once the game is released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
