Sony's Killzone franchise has been quiet for quite a while now. In a recent interview tied to the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, Killzone composer Joris de Man voiced his support for the series' potential return, joining a growing chorus of fans and industry figures hoping to see it revived.
De Man acknowledged the existence of petitions calling for the franchise's comeback, expressing both hope and caution. "I can't speak for Guerrilla," he said, "but I hope it happens because I think it’s an iconic franchise. However, it needs to consider current sensibilities and shifts in what players want today." He noted the darker, heavier tone of the series, which may not align with modern preferences for more casual gaming experiences.
When asked about the shape such a revival might take, de Man suggested a remastered collection could resonate better than a completely new entry. "I think a remastered version would be successful," he explained, "but I’m not sure a new game would be as well-received. People might have moved on or prefer something more approachable."
Known for its slower pace and heavier gameplay compared to titles like Call of Duty, the Killzone series has historically been praised for its atmospheric storytelling and visual fidelity. However, the franchise has faced criticism for its perceived lack of responsiveness, particularly in Killzone 2. Its gritty, melancholic aesthetic remains polarizing among gamers.
Despite Guerrilla's current focus on the critically acclaimed Horizon series, the gap since Killzone Shadow Fall leaves room for speculation about the franchise's future. For dedicated fans, the possibility of a return—whether through remastered editions or entirely new content—is undeniably exciting. Even if it never happens, de Man's endorsement ensures the idea remains alive for those eager to see Killzone re-emerge.
