The excitement surrounding the potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has surged once again following Square Enix's launch of the official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. The site, available in Japanese, commemorates the game's release on July 7, 2000, and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

The website teases fans with the promise of "various projects," including merchandise and collaborations, sparking speculation that a long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake might finally be revealed. This speculation is fueled by the timing of the website's launch, coinciding with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2. Fans are eagerly anticipating whether Square Enix will announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the Switch 2 during this event.

While the website's mention of "various projects" could refer to a range of initiatives, it has certainly stirred excitement among fans. Last year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida discussed the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9, suggesting that the game's extensive content might necessitate a multi-part release similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

In early 2024, Yoshi-P announced Final Fantasy 9-themed extras for the Collector's Edition and Digital Collector's Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These include the Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders offering a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at the significance of these Final Fantasy 9 references, adding to the anticipation.

While many games on the list have since been confirmed or released, including the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reported to be in development in June 2021, though no further updates have been provided since then.
