"New Director for Live-Action Street Fighter Movie"

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 25,2025

A new Street Fighter movie is gearing up, and it's got a director who's ready to throw down. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the wildly funny The Eric Andre Show, has been tapped to helm the upcoming film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom, the game's creator, is said to be "deeply involved" in this project, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.

This isn't the first time Street Fighter has been adapted for the big screen. Who could forget the iconic 1994 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the unforgettable Raul Julia as M. Bison? While critics may have had their doubts, it's become a cult classic in its own right.

Details on casting are still under wraps, but fans can likely anticipate seeing their beloved Street Fighter characters come to life once again. Originally, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo behind Talk to Me, but they stepped away from the film last summer. With Sakurai at the helm, known for his absurdist humor, it seems Legendary might be steering the movie towards a more comedic and perhaps cartoonish tone, which could be a thrilling twist for fans of the game's more whimsical elements.

While you wait for the movie, why not dive into the latest Street Fighter game? Street Fighter 6 has just introduced its newest fighter, Mai Shiranui. For a deep dive into the game, check out our full Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
