Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Here's Everything Guardians Need to Know

If you're a Destiny 2 player, buckle up because Bungie just dropped some big news about what’s coming up in this sci-fi shooter. Under the banner of "Year of Prophecy," players can look forward to not one but two new expansions and several significant seasonal and core game updates—both for paying and free players alike.

This marks the first year in Destiny 2 history featuring four major content updates: two paid expansions and two free major updates. The former is exclusively for those who purchase the expansions, while the latter will be accessible to everyone.

First off, Rite of the Nine has already dropped and is available to all players at no extra cost. This dungeon dive offers a fresh twist for both veteran dungeon explorers and newcomers. While some of the dungeons—like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep—may feel familiar to long-time Guardians, even the most seasoned players can expect unique surprises. You’ll reconnect with old friends like Orin, and refreshed dungeon weapons await.

Fast forward to July 15, and the highly anticipated expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, arrives. As part of a multi-year story arc spanning multiple expansions, this paid-for content introduces two key characters: new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard Ikora. Set on the new destination Kepler—a location inspired by the puzzle-solving mechanics of the game’s dungeons—you’ll encounter fresh enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

July 15 also brings major changes to the core game, including revamped armor and gear systems to enhance build crafting opportunities. Additionally, a new activity selection screen called the Portal will launch, allowing players to easily choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops. Fireteam Ops and Pinnacle Ops cater to quick team-based action and longer co-op experiences, while Solo Ops are perfect for players who prefer self-contained, single-player sessions.

Players can customize their gameplay further with 50 new modifiers offering deeper customization options and more challenging gameplay. Curated activity rotations ensure there’s always something new to explore.

Pre-orders are now live, complete with exclusive rewards. For instance, the Edge of Fate Pre-Order package grants access to the campaign, a new raid, an Active Rewards Pass, and exclusive pre-order items such as an Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Other editions include even more perks like additional campaigns, ships, and ornaments.

Looking ahead, another major update called Ash & Iron rolls out on September 9, followed by the release of the second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. Later in March 2025, the Shadow & Order update hits.

Renegades, inspired by the Star Wars universe, blends Destiny 2’s signature storytelling with iconic sci-fi themes.

This announcement comes as welcome news following Bungie’s recent layoffs, which affected over 220 employees—nearly 17% of their workforce—earlier this year. Despite these challenges, Bungie remains focused on delivering stellar content, as evidenced by their upcoming projects like the Marathon reboot, set to launch later this year.
