Atuel: Award-Winning Documentary Game Hits Android Soon

Matajuegos has exciting news for fans of unique gaming experiences: their surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. The game's Steam page is already live, allowing eager players to pre-register. Google Play pre-registration is expected to open soon, broadening the game's accessibility.

Based in Argentina, the indie co-op Matajuegos first released Atuel on itch.io in September 2022. The game quickly garnered acclaim for its innovative mix of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and mesmerizing, dreamlike visuals. Atuel's distinctive approach earned it the 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades. It has also been showcased at prestigious venues such as the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Curious about what Atuel looks like? Take a peek at the trailer below.

What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?

Atuel immerses players in the stunning yet climate-impacted Atuel River Valley in Argentina. The game transcends traditional gameplay, offering an experience where you transform into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming an integral part of the landscape. One moment you might be gliding through the skies, and the next, you're embodying the flow of the river itself.

The narrative is enriched with real-life interviews from historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, who share insights into the region's past, its current condition, and the looming challenges posed by climate change. Matajuegos partnered with the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to weave these stories into the game's fabric.

The game's visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, offer an almost otherworldly experience, setting Atuel apart in the gaming landscape. While Android pre-registration is pending, you can explore more about Atuel on its Steam page or the official website. When the game hits mobile platforms, it will feature localization in seven additional languages and full controller support.
