"Ark Fans Criticize AI-Generated Content in Expansion Trailer"

The new Ark: Survival Evolved expansion trailer from publisher Snail Games has drawn intense criticism from the Ark community, who have condemned it for its use of poor-quality generative AI imagery. This backlash follows Snail Games’ GDC announcement of their new expansion map, "Ark: Aquatica," which they describe as a non-canonical side story set in an ambitious underwater environment, where 95% of gameplay occurs beneath the surface.

The community's reaction has been overwhelmingly negative. Irish YouTuber Syntac, with over 1.9 million subscribers, expressed his disgust, stating, "This is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourselves." His comment, reflecting the sentiment of many, is currently the most prominent on the Ark: Aquatica trailer. Other viewers have echoed this sentiment, describing the trailer as "pathetic" and "embarrassing." The trailer itself is littered with AI-generated anomalies, such as fish that blur in and out of existence, a grotesquely deformed hand holding a spear gun, a floating octopus that appears in front of an ambiguous shipwreck, and human feet that morph into flippers.

Marvel as this man's foot magically turns into a fin.In response, the original developer of Ark: Survival Evolved, Studio Wildcard, has quickly distanced itself from the controversy. They clarified on social media that Ark: Aquatica is not a project of their team, emphasizing their focus on "Ark: Survival Ascended & Ark 2." They also expressed excitement about bringing "Ark: Lost Colony," a new expansion for Ark: Survival Ascended, to fans later this year, which will serve as a lead-in to the sequel.

The future of Ark 2 has been uncertain since it missed its previously planned late 2024 release window. However, Studio Wildcard confirmed this week that development on the dinosaur survival sequel is ongoing. Adding to the excitement, Ark: The Animated Series star Michelle Yeoh reprises her role in the trailer for the new expansion.
