In a surprising turn of events, indie game Schedule I, a co-op crime simulation where players rise from small-time dope pushers to kingpins, has been accused of copyright infringement by Movie Games S.A., the developers behind The Drug Dealer Simulator series. According to a report by the Polish Press Agency on April 3, Movie Games S.A. claims that Schedule I may have infringed on their intellectual property by replicating plot elements, game mechanics, and even the user interface of their Drug Dealer Simulator games.
Despite the ongoing legal analysis and no official outcomes yet, the gaming community has taken sides, predominantly supporting Schedule I. In a backlash against Movie Games S.A., both The Drug Dealer Simulator and Drug Dealer Simulator 2 have been hit with a wave of negative reviews on Steam, now labeled as "Overwhelmingly Negative" and "Mostly Negative" respectively. Many of these reviews criticize Movie Games S.A. for what is perceived as bullying an indie developer and highlight the company's apparent hypocrisy, noting that similar games were not targeted until Schedule I's release.
The fervor surrounding Schedule I is evident in its performance on Steam. Released into Early Access on PC on March 25, the game has garnered "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews and currently ranks as the 2nd top-selling game on the platform, surpassing well-known titles like inZOI, Monster Hunter Wilds, and the indie game R.E.P.O. SteamDB reports that Schedule I has reached an all-time peak of 459,075 concurrent players.
At Game8, we found Schedule I to be a surprisingly addictive and rewarding experience, earning it the nickname "Breaking Bad" simulator. For a deeper dive into our thoughts on Schedule I's early access release, be sure to check out our detailed article below.
The controversy surrounding Schedule I and Movie Games S.A. continues to unfold, with fans and gamers closely watching how this legal and community battle will resolve.
