Stanley Kubricks Filmadaption von "The Shining" von 1980 ist für seine eindringliche letzte Szene bekannt, auf der ein Foto aus dem Vierten Juli -Ball des Overlook -Hotels aus dem Jahr 1921 von 1921 auftritt und Jack Torrance (gespielt von Jack Nicholson) inmitten einer Menge vor seiner Geburt deutlich zeigt. Dieses ikonische Bild wurde durch Überlagerung von Nicholson auf ein echtes historisches Foto erstellt, das bis vor kurzem schwer fassbar war. Nach 45 Jahren seit der Veröffentlichung des Films wurde das ursprüngliche Foto von 1921 endlich entdeckt.

Alasdair Spark, ein pensionierter Akademiker der University of Winchester, teilte Einblicke in den Entdeckungsprozess auf Gettys Instagram. Er enthüllte, dass das Foto am 14. Februar 1921 als einer von drei von der Topical Press Agency bei einem St. Valentine's Day Ball aufgenommen wurde, in den Kaiserzimmern im Royal Palace Hotel in Kensington. Der Beitrag enthielt einen neuen Scan aus den ursprünglichen Glas-Platten-negativen und unterstützenden handgeschriebenen Dokumenten.

Spark, zusammen mit der New York Times -Mitarbeiter Arick Toller und engagierten Redditoren, führte eine umfangreiche Suche nach dem Bild des Bildes durch. Anfangs stießen sie auf zahlreiche Sackgassen, mit Kreuzerhöhen an Santos Casani, dem Mann, der ursprünglich auf dem Foto stand, und nicht übereinstimmte. Die Suche schien zwecklos zu sein, bis Spark aus dem On-Set-Fotografen Murray Close erfuhr, dass das Bild aus der BBC Hulton Library stammte. Da er wusste, dass Hulton 1958 die topische Presse erworben hatte und dass Getty 1991 später übernahm, suchte Spark durch Gettys riesige Kollektion und stellte fest, dass das Bild am 10. Oktober 1978 für Hawk -Filme, Kubricks Produktionsfirma, zur Verwendung in "The Shining" lizenziert wurde.

Spark kam zu dem Schluss, dass das Foto von 1921, wie Kubrick behauptet hatte, nicht 1923, wie zuvor von Joan Smith vorgeschlagen. Das Bild zeigte eine Gruppe gewöhnlicher Londoner bei einem sozialen Ereignis, in dem Theorien über Berühmtheiten oder finstere Figuren auf dem Foto eingefasst wurden. Die einzige Veränderung war die Zugabe von Jack Nicholson.

Diese Entdeckung ist eine aufregende Offenbarung für Fans von "The Shining". Stephen Kings Roman, der 1977 veröffentlicht wurde, wurde in zwei bemerkenswerte Versionen adaptiert: Kubricks legendärer Film und Mick Garris 'Miniserie von 1997, die dem Buch treu blieben.
