Chilenischer Pokémon-Sammelkartenspiel-Weltmeister trifft Präsident Boric: Eine Feier des Könnens und des Sportsgeistes

Fernando Cifuentes, der 18-jährige Pokémon-Sammelkartenspiel-Weltmeister, erhielt eine außergewöhnliche Ehre: ein Treffen mit dem Präsidenten von Chile im Palacio de La Moneda. Bei diesem bedeutsamen Anlass wurden Cifuentes und neun weitere chilenische Konkurrenten im Präsidentenpalast zu einem feierlichen Essen und Fotos mit Präsident Boric und anderen Regierungsbeamten begrüßt. Die Regierung zeigte sich sehr stolz auf die Leistungen der Spieler, insbesondere auf ihr Weiterkommen am zweiten Tag des Wettbewerbs.

Präsident Boric, selbst ein Pokémon-Fan (sein Favorit ist Squirtle!), hob die positiven sozialen Auswirkungen von Sammelkartenspielen hervor und betonte den kollaborativen Geist, der in diesen wettbewerbsorientierten Gemeinschaften gefördert wird. Als Zeichen für den Sieg von Cifuentes erhielt er eine individuell gerahmte Karte mit sich selbst und Iron Thorns, seinem Meisterschafts-Pokémon. Die Inschrift der Karte lautet: „Fernando und Iron Thorns. Fähigkeit: Weltmeister. Fernando Cifuentes aus Iquique schrieb Geschichte als erster Chilene, der das Masters-Finale der Pokémon-Weltmeisterschaft 2024 in Honolulu, Hawaii, gewann.“

Cifuentes' Reise zum Sieg verlief nicht ohne Drama. Er entging nur knapp dem Ausscheiden in den Top 8 und profitierte von der Disqualifikation von Ian Robb wegen unsportlichen Verhaltens. Diese unerwartete Wendung der Ereignisse brachte ihn ins Halbfinale gegen Jesse Parker, den er besiegte, bevor er im Finale Seinosuke Shiokawa besiegte und sich das Preisgeld von 50.000 US-Dollar sicherte.
